Inflammation of the joints in the feet and ankles is one of the most common causes of pain and discomfort. Medical conditions such as arthritis or an injury are frequently the causes of swelling and pain. But a frequently overlooked cause of joint inflammation is a poor diet consisting of a lot of highly processed foods and excessive alcohol consumption. Many natural foods, however, actually decrease inflammation and improve the condition of your joints.

 

Some of the best additions to your diet for decreasing inflammation include the following:

 

Red and black berries. Eat an abundance of blueberries, cherries, raspberries and strawberries.  The anthocyanins contained in these berries have been proven to reduce the occurrence of gout attacks by decreasing uric acid concentrations and reducing inflammation. 

Leeks, onions, and garlic. These vegetables have high concentrations of a compound called diallyl disulfide, which is thought to block the action of cartilage damaging enzymes on a cellular level.

Oranges, grapefruit and other citrus fruits. Vitamin C from these fruits has been shown to decrease the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis.

Fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring are all very high in omega 3 fatty acids, which are an excellent inflammation fighter. If fish isn’t your cup of tea, soybeans and lentils are also high in omega 3s.

Green tea. The polyphenols contained in green tea are loaded with antioxidants which help reduce inflammation and decrease cartilage damage.

Coconut and olive oils. These oils contain enzymes that are excellent at fighting inflammation.

 

Since some systemic problems can first show up with symptoms in your feet, staying proactive in maintaining your overall health is an excellent way to avoid future foot issues.
