Last month the Social Work Department at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Center (PRRC) observed International Day of Persons with Disabilities by hosting a Foot Care Workshop for the diabetic patients of its Amputee Clinic. A large amount of the clinic’s amputee patients include adults aged 35 to 75 who suffer from diabetes. Activities included a presentation on proper diet for diabetics, a discussion on diabetes and foot care, and demonstrations on proper foot care techniques for patients.

While during the summertime, opens shoes and skin exposed to the elements can make for cracked heels, winter and the colder months are the main causes behind the condition at the end of the year. Cracked heels occur when the skin loses its moisture, causing it to dry out and crack. To combat winter dryness be sure to keep a loofah in the shower to exfoliate the skin, always moisturize to keep the skin smooth, and consider wearing gel socks to keep your heels soft.

Cracked heels are unappealing, and make it harder for you walk around in sandals. Not only may they look bad, but they can also tear stockings, socks, and wear out your shoes. There are several methods to help restore a cracked heel and prevent further damage.

How do you get them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief, or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – wearing socks with medicated creams, helps lock in moisture so it can stay on longer.

Moisturizers – applying it both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – these remove dead skin, and then you can massage cream onto your foot. This way the cream will be absorbed. The skin needs to be exfoliated; therefore the outer layer dead skin needs removal.

On Yahoo!’s “Most Searched Symptoms” list, rheumatoid arthritis ranks number four. Accordingly the disease affects nearly 1.5 million adults in the United States alone. Known to affect the lining of the joints and bones through deformity, swelling, and erosion; RA has been associated with the wrist, hand, and joints in the feet. Although symptoms typically include pain and stiffness in these joints, fever, loss of energy, and dry eyes/mouth can also occur if you have the disease.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Severe pain and immobility are caused by an inflammation of the lining of your joints, and in worse cases the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone can occur.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, many cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area. Pain will often initially present in the toes before the condition worsens and spreads throughout the entire foot.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of the feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis
