Ways to Avoid Nail Fungus

Nail fungus may be more noticeable in the hot summer months, but the ever present fungi that cause this unsightly and possibly malodorous condition never take a vacation and can always be found in warm, moist environments such as your footwear at any time of year. While there are now advanced therapies such as lasers to treat difficult nail fungus infections, the best way to deal with nail fungus is to avoid contacting the microbes in the first place.

Some tips to avoid nail fungus infections include the following:

  • Proper trimming technique—Keep your nails short, but not too short. Also, always trim your nails straight across to help avoid an infection from an ingrown toenail.
  • Let your feet breathe—Air out your feet daily, and be sure to wear socks and footwear made of breathable fabrics to help keep moisture levels down.
  • Don’t share—Avoid wearing other people’s shoes or using their personal care products, like nail files and clippers, since infection can spread this way.
  • Cover your feet—While in public areas such as showers, locker rooms, gyms, and swimming pools, always wear a pair of sandals or shower shoes to insulate your feet from possibly infected surfaces.
  • Salons—Make sure the salon you use for pedicures has proper sterilization techniques in place.
  • Antifungals—A variety of powders and sprays are available to put in your shoes or directly on your feet to kill the fungi that cause nail infections.
