Taking Care of Bunions

Bunions are a very common toe deformity that affects over 40 percent of adults over the age of 65. Many younger individuals are also plagued with bunion pain and discomfort that is characterized by a painful enlargement of the big toe joint and a pronounced bump on the top or side of the toe. The force of the growing deformity forces the big toe into the second toe causing a variety of problems including pain, discomfort, and blistering.

Bunions tend to grow rather slowly, and you may not notice the potential for problems to develop, so it’s important to have your podiatrist take a look. If left untreated, bursitis and arthritis may take hold creating a chronic condition that is much more difficult to treat.

Treatment for bunions

Some of the treatments you can discuss with your foot doctor include:

  • Well fitted shoes with orthotic inserts - it’s very important to spend the extra money and get a good pair of properly fitted shoes that have good arch support and wide, deep toe boxes to accommodate padding and inserts.
  • Night splints - this device is worn to bed and pulls your big toe into a straighter position, while realigning the joints.
  • Mobility exercises - prevent stiffness by doing exercises like picking up marbles with your toes. Scrunching a towel with your toes is also effective.

If you are experiencing bunion pain and discomfort, see your foot doctor for proper treatment.
