3 Men’s Foot Problems

Men tend to neglect the overall health of their feet, and often suffer for long periods of time with foot issues that can be easily treated. Here are three foot problems that affect men more frequently than women.

Frequent Male Foot Condition #1—Stinky Feet

Let’s face it, men tend to have more problems with sweaty, smelly feet than women. Your feet contain a large amount of sweat glands, and a combination of excessive sweating and wearing the same shoes every day can create an ideal environment for the growth of odor causing bacteria. Simply allowing your shoes to completely dry out between use is an excellent way to eliminate smelly bacteria. Socks made of more breathable materials, such as wool or cotton, can also help decrease sweating and odor.

Frequent Male Foot Condition #2—Ingrown Toenails

Men tend to be more haphazard when cutting their toenails, and one of the main causes of an ingrown toenail is improper cutting technique. When nails are cut too short, or when they are not cut straight across, the toenail can grow into the skin around it, resulting in this painful condition.

Frequent Male Foot Condition #3—Corns & Calluses

Corns and calluses form as a response to increased friction and irritation from poorly fitting footwear. Although they tend to go away on their own when the source of the rubbing is removed, untreated corns and calluses can become thicker and more painful. Pads and cushions can help isolate corns to promote healing. Soaking and gentle scrubbing with a pumice stone or nail file can also be effective. If you have poor circulation problems or numbness in your feet, which can be caused by diabetes, it is best to consult with your foot specialist for proper treatment of corns and calluses.
